May we be people who hunger after purity in the motivations of your hidden hearts…

“When you fast, don’t look like those who pretend to be spiritual. They want everyone to know they’re fasting, so they appear in public looking miserable, gloomy, and disheveled.[o] Believe me, they’ve already received their reward in full.

When you fast, don’t let it be obvious, but instead, wash your face[p] and groom yourself and realize that your Father in the secret place is the one who is watching all that you do in secret and will continue to reward you openly.”

When I was a child I was taught secrets are bad. And of course, when we keep something hidden it hurts us or hurts other people or are just plain wrong and then they are bad. But they are good secrets.

…while the father really values the law…there is a just as important principle in play, and it is the condition of our heart when we are keeping the law. Because we can do the right thing, but without the right heart motivation it is meaningless to the father.

“Don’t worry about anything, instead pray about everything. Tell God your needs and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. Then the peace of Christ, which surpasses understanding,  will keep your hearts and minds at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.” 

This was the first ever scripture that I learned. I learnt it from an old Children’s Living  Bible which has long gone by the way side.

God ‘s secret plan has been revealed to us. It is a plan centred in Christ designed long ago according to His good pleasure.

This is the Plan.

I am realising at the moment that a great antidote to anxiety and worry is to think deeply, to focus my mind on the incredible truth that I am adopted by my heavenly Father.

I want to share with you the whole of the passage we’ve been looking at the whole week.

Food, water and clothing are particularly relevant at this moment in time when we see empty shelves in shops, but actually, that abundance of provision goes far beyond just physical needs. I want to take a moment to meditate on Gods utter goodness and abundance – I think it’s only when we really get hold of his abundance and his INTENT to take care of us that we can begin to walk out of self-sufficiency and into wholehearted reliance on our father. We are free to serve the One master.

In this time of our world being turned upside down, I wonder how many of us are finding that, under the surface, we are feeling shaken by concerns and anxieties that we haven’t experienced before. I want to share a passage with you that I have found helpful in revealing the motivations of my own heart.

I don’t now what’s going around in your head these days, but in mine are concerns about food shopping, facilitating my kids with their distance learning and my 80 year old Dad. Our “Normal” is being redefined. It’s a scary time.  It’s a time of shaking. A time of discomfort.

We are experiencing tensions in our lives that we have not experienced before and its is shaking us. Whether we are key workers working our fingers to the bone in our hospitals or making food available to us. Or whether we are stuck alone at home, it is a time of great shaking. You are coming into contact with your spiritual poverty.

As a mum, wife, follower of Jesus and sometimes actress, I love the Word and have much joy in sharing it. My aim is to step into scripture and bring it to life and my hope is that something of the spirit of these ancient words will capture your heart and encourage you to discover it more deeply for yourself.
